Mental Capacity Act
Speakup Self-advocates were involved in writing the first drafts of the Mental Capacity Act in 2006, with the National Forum. Recently, parts of the Act have been amended and it has become more complicated. If you are unsure about this, work with someone you trust to support you to understand it. We have a film called “Decisions, Decisions”, which tells you about the principles of the Mental Capacity Act.

In 2020 the law changed and there are now the new Liberty Protection Safeguards which change the way people supporting someone need to work and think about Mental Capacity and keeping people safe.
